Front Brake Pads - Sensors?

Post by Chrizh » Mon Jan 21, 2019 9:45 am

Morning all. Had my 2016 QQ in for its interval (oil change) service. They had two advisories, one being rear tyres (no problem there). The other was that the front brake pads were approximately 80% worn. I picked the vehicle up at 15k on the clock, I've done 35k since so I'm not disputing that they will need doing soon. What I would like to know though, is if the brake pads have wear sensors? I intend on ordering the brake pads and fitting myself (with help from mechanic friend) and quite comfortable with doing so. However, if it requires sensors as well, I'm wondering if it would be better to take it to a garage? I'm not convinced there are sensors although I could be wrong, as I'm basing that assumption on the fact that the on board computer has not alerted me to the fact they are worn?

Your help as always, greatly appreciated.

I've not heard of anyone mention sensors before but a quick Google turned up:

... which shows non-electric ones which I'm presuming you could readily manage.

Thanks. After some more in depth Google research, I've gone ahead and ordered some ATE branded ones.

You may have an issue releasing brakes without Nissan s/ware.

Just searched a bit more. I found this response:

"You don't need any pc software to pull pistons back. Just take off the brake motor from caliber and turn motor coupling with t40 torx CCW. This will back up mechanism. Now you can use the old-style press to press the piston back in."

Now that is interesting, all other info I have found was saying software needed but I did wonder if there must be an alternate way,

Hi Chizh

I use to be a mechanic years ago. And in those days any sensor wiring was attached to the brake pad. You just unplugged it from the wiring loom, unbolted the lower part of the calliper which then swung up exposing the brake pads.
You then removed the worn brake pads and using large grips squeazed back the calliper piston after first removing the break fluid reservoir cap and covering with a cloth. Then it's just a matter of replacing the new pads in reverse order.

A little tip. If you have any, put a tiny dab of copper slip on the top and bottom edges of the brake pads. This helps to keep them from sticking in the calliper housing.

As I said, this was the procedure years ago. Things might be different now, but I'd be surprised if they were. It's pretty straight forward really provided you have the right tools. Car manufacturers are cunning these days with their Allen key and multi spline bolts.
