New models sold in the EU will feature Intelligent Speed Assistance limiters - Dave πŸ˜‰
European Parliament, Council and Commission approved legislation for them. Vehicles will be slowed in accordance with speed limits using GPS and traffic sign recognition cameras.
Models sold in the UK are likely to have the same technology after the Vehicle Certification Agency said it would mirror EU rules post-Brexit. The rules will come into force in Britain even if Brexit happens because the UK’s Vehicle Certification Agency said it will still mirror the EU rules.

Sometimes my QQ sign recognition system flashes up a nearby lower speed limit such as a slip road. That could cause accidents if the speed is automatically reduced.

I'd prefer the comment "inappropriate speed" - sometimes 80 is acceptable when 30 isn't in other situations

The number of single speed drivers I see on a daily basis who probably think they are driving safely because they are not speeding. 40 in a 60 is as dangerous as 40 in a 30 when there's kids leaving school, for example

Speed limit recognition in QQ uses a number of factors from what i understand. The camera at the top of the windscreen is used in conjunction with the satnav maps and GPS location. As Geordieman has pointed out, sometimes the system will pick up sliproad signs, or signs close to junctions, where the road is angled in such a way that the signs are visible to the camera because its NOT just a 90 deg. corner. This happens quite often to me, both in the city and on rural roads.

Another problem can be were some 'A' roads parallel motorways quite closely. There are some areas where i can be on an 'A' road next to the M42 for example where the 50 or 60 mph limit is miss-shown by the car as the 70 mph limit of the M42. This is just one example, but there are a few others i can think of. Including one where the 70 mph limit of a near by dual carriageway shows when passing a school with 20 mph limit sings all around it.

So it would seem that the speed limit sign system uses GPS / map information over the camera view.

It seems that there may be a huge amount of work to be done before the accident rate falls. Because at the moment it will likely only increase.

Perhaps a system where the vehicle will only start if your phone is locked in a secure box and you've passed a breath test would be a better start. And maybe actually saying that 12 points means 12 points on a licence. Not allowing people who plead hardship to keep their licences, sometimes with more than 50 points on their licence.

I thought this, but my brother in law has an X Trail without satnav, so no GPS. I assumed his can only work off the camera, but they live out in the sticks. No speed sign from the main road (40mph) down to their house. The 30mph sign is after their house, yet it changes to 30mph in the car before it can possibly see the 30mph sign. So I still don't know how it works :?

I don't think I have ever seen a 25 before.

That's why I thought I ought to post a picture. Must try it in the new car to see if that recognises it.

I'd have to say I've occasionally turned the manual speed limiter on and found it to be pretty pointless. Might as well just use cruise control.
