Since the internal combustion engine was invented there has been continuous development to get as much useful fuel/air mixture into the cylinders in order to produce as much power as possible in an efficient way from the smallest, lightest engine.

In the electric vehicle massive power is available easily by connecting the battery to the motor. Unfortunately this arrangement would make everything catch fire, so the control unit is there to limit the power and ration it in a way that the heat is dealt with and the battery lasts a reasonable time.

When I was an apprentice 50 years ago we messed around with an electric "invalid carriage" (as they were known then) and sure enough it was easy to turn it into a dragster with amazing power, for a very short time!

Are electric cars as 'green' as you think ? - Dave 🤫
Most of the world's stocks of this lightest of metals are found in brine deep beneath salt flats, high in the Andes. In Argentina, in Jujuy - the province with the highest percentage of indigenous households in the country - massive projects are under way.
But in a super-dry region, with water the most precious resource, and lithium extraction demanding huge quantities of it, there's anxiety - and outright opposition.

A new age for electric motors - Dave 😊
“When it comes to making electric cars better, it's the batteries that you'll hear about the most. But what about the motor that actually drives the car? Car enthusiasts are interested in what is under the bonnet of a traditional car, but in the electric world the motor gets little attention. A joint venture between the UK government and the automotive industry in improvements for motor technology are set to have a profound effect on the performance of electric vehicles in the coming years”.

Its black boxes and very expensive ones! Dyson jacked it in a few weeks back. And he's supposed to be Mr Leccy motor man...for vacuum cleaners anyway.

Electric car propulsion is partially identified by the newer term Power Electronics. Generating and managing 700 volts. And for designers thats where the main failure risks emerge. To date I know nought about the car failures but I can always start with capacitors. Then think about general production line outputs....make it cheaper of course.

Back to the subject of Re-Cycling E-Batteries. There appears to be some movement planned here in the EU on this subject which might be of interest - Dave 😉

Innovation project on Automotive Battery Recycling 2020. Supported by EIT RawMaterials, the Automotive Battery Recycling 2020 (AutoBatRec2020) project (launched this year) aims at identifying efficient routines that are ecologically sound, economically viable and readily transferable to industrial scale. Every aspect of the value chain will be under investigation, from novel collection and transportation concepts to automated dismantling and sorting technologies, and finally separation of elementry high-tech metals.

Meanwhile down in a UK garden shed...with the dumb cluck BBC. Seems the electrolyte is drinkable?

This might be worth a read - Dave 🤨

“The performance of an electric car can PLUMMET when the temperature drops. Range can drop by as much as 50% due to repeat cold starts. That's because electric cars produce far less waste heat than petrol or diesels. It means owners need to rely on heaters to warm the cabin, which saps power. Cooler conditions also impacts charging time, battery performance and how regenerative brakes operate”

50% reduction in range during cold weather? I’ve owned a leaf from New and traded it in for a new BMW i3 last March. I’ve barely noticed any difference and live in west Scotland.
Think folk just make these predictions for the sake of it.

It might be time to buy shares in RAC/AA/Green Flag recovery etc.

Begin Rant
The main question is the adequacy of the electrical infrastructure IMO. Don't care what a battery does but can we easily find a suitable charge point PDQ. In the rush to get going this topic does not seem to get much of an airing.

Replacement power stations are clearly dogged with build problems and not only here in UK. The VI's wasted money on HS2 where there exists a case for distributed smaller Nuke power plant. We need to get base engineering projects right first and quit jumping off on alarmist ventures.
