Had a search, can't find anything so I thought best to ask.

My electronic handbrake sometimes does not release when I go to pull away, and needs to be released manually. Is this anything to worry about or is it a fad of the system?

My 2019 hasn't suffered from this with either the full electronic brake nor the auto-hold one either.

Qashowner, here is an attachment from the “Nissan Drivers Guide” for the J11. We had a QQ for 5 years and experienced no problems, might be worth a Dealer visit just to clear your own mind, as Brakes are important and you never know the exact reason - Dave 🤨

Welcome to the Nissan "iffy electro handbrake system" club. I never know when to expect it and stall the bloody thing quite often. Its a Nissan QQ feature?

Its based on a number of sensor inputs and electronic processing logic to operate 2 rear brake motors (screws). Sensors/Switches = Throttle/ Clutch/Brake pedals, Eng RPM, G Sensor, Power and Electric Parking Brake Control Module + Actuators. Do they consistently/reliably work as a system...No is the answer to that and to detect which one (or two?) at anytime is an error contributor is near impossible without major test equipment. Add patience...lots.

Sometimes with a bit of welly I can get the discs dragging the pads as the 2 motors reluctantly and slowly release (grinding sound). I'd say its quite dangerous and finding a newer car without it is not really possible.

Pity..!

Had this once about 18 months ago. In my case, I had removed my seatbelt so the handbrake would not release. Another safety feature.

Thanks for the info, but the problems I get is not touching the hand brake lever at all. If I park up and turn off the engine, the hand brake applies itself automatically, as it should. It is sometimes when I then restart the car and try to pull away, the hand brake will sometimes not release automatically and sometimes involves restarting the engine. Problem is, it is so infrequent unless it is recorded as a fault, I am not sure it would be easy to diagnose. I am with Calnorth on this, iffy handbrake :D

Actually there is something more to be said about this system (J11b Park Brake).

The diagnostics document for it is 145 pages long. About 70% of it relates to procedural work on fault detection/rectification. Most of it uses an automated test equipment (ATE)...Nissan Consult.

The system consists of a Park Brake Controller module and some wiring to the Park brake switch and to the rear brake motor/actuators. Its rather insane really because the usual hand lever and steel cables would be enough. I know handbrake on disc systems are not good. There are far less insane ways to deal with that.

There are as such many things that can go wrong. Apart from mechanical, the extent of software control and Bus comms is simply...looney tunes.
