Overall Auto Express Rating - 5.0 out of 5

Verdict

The Ariya is a great leap in the right direction for Nissan. It's more premium-feeling than anything we've yet seen from the brand, and it backs this up with some great engineering and technology underneath the stylish body. Performance and refinement are impressive, as is the Ariya's range from even the smaller battery model. Individual touches inside and plenty of functional features combined with interesting design and materials make it an appealing choice that proves Nissan's electrification push is really gathering pace.

...

It's this mix of strong performances in every area where a new car – and an all-new EV – needs to score highly that makes the Ariya such an appealing proposition. Revolutionary new electric cars are few and far between these days, but as a successful evolution of the formula, Nissan's first next-generation model is a convincing line in the sand for the Japanese brand.

4/5

Late entrant to a burgeoning segment shines by virtue of its slick drive, attention to detail and on-paper performance

... first impressions suggest the Ariya takes the dependability and rational appeal of the pioneering Leaf, while injecting a substantial dose of kerb appeal into the bargain. Certainly, the Ariya is much more than an electric Qashqai successor: it feels like the beginning of a brand's transformation, and – on the basis of its strengths – there's good reason to be excited about what will follow.

I realise there's now a separate Ariya forum but our readers might like to look at this comparison test:

Just dropped my Qashqai off for its first service and they had an Ariya outside for demonstration purposes. Pity it wasn’t my courtesy car for the day (got a ‘20’ plate Juke).

I would say this is Gun Metallic Grey? :?

Autocar have today published a full Road Test of the Ariya - and it's a rather damning conclusion!

The developing market for family-sized electric vehicles already has its noisy Americans, a few snazzy European-made options and one or two eye-catching Koreans, but it feels ripe for enrichment by an innovative Japanese contender - and the Nissan Ariya is trying very hard to be that car. It looks bold and alternative; it's cleverly packaged and spacious; it's genuinely inviting and surprisingly luxurious; and, at its best, it's strikingly refined and intuitive to drive.

Some clever interior features and a long-range battery that promises great electric range serve the car well, too. The great shame is that Nissan's particular chassis design and suspension tuning don't do likewise - at least, not on so many UK roads.

Out of town, the Ariya has a problem with close body control that too often becomes irksome to its driver and passengers. That it isn't particularly engaging to drive can be overlooked on a car with these dynamic priorities. However, that it simply isn't as comfortable-riding as rivals costing considerably less is a significant problem for a car that is claimed to be all about relaxing, sophisticated, futuristic family transport.

They rate it as 3½/5 and below - in order of desirability - these similar cars: Skoda Enyaq iV, Genesis GV60, Kia EV6 and Tesla Model Y. It's dearer than all except the Tesla with the Skoda being a lot less (over £11k).

The new Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE boosts the EV's power to 302bhp, but it comes at a cost

The Ariya e-4ORCE, as the name suggests, adds four-wheel-drive grip (and a fair few quid) to one of our favourite electric cars. As well as even better straight line performance, it actually rides slightly better than two-wheel-drive Ariyas, but that wouldn’t be enough to make us switch our allegiance from the brilliant and cheaper models in the line-up.

...

You won’t be buying the e-4ORCE for its sportiness, though. Although a zero to 62mph time of 5.7 seconds is swift by any standards – and the Ariya has the usual, instant shove in the back performance of many an EV – this range-topper doesn’t feel any sharper to drive than the standard car.

It’s got the same relaxed and slightly artificial steering as lesser models – not a problem for us – while the weight gains of the extra motor on the rear axle and bigger 87 kWh battery do little to reduce body roll if you do feel like upping the pace through a corner.

...

So all that we like about the Ariya is present and correct and, if you don’t want to go the whole hog with Evolve trim, you can save yourself nearly £4,000 for the slightly less plush and lower tech e-4ORCE Advance.

But much as we like the Ariya, unless that extra grip is really necessary where you drive, the e-4ORCE isn’t the sweet spot of the range. We’d stick with two-wheel-drive and let you decide on the battery size depending on the range you need.
