Considering buying an auto 2011 - should I be worried about the CVT gearbox?

Hi folks hope you can help me. I'm considering buying qashqai (petrol + auto) but heard about the CVT problems. I've spoke to one trade seller who said the 1st generation was okay and the later versions were bad. I test drove a 2011 model (61 reg 2.0 ACENTA 5dr) with another dealer a few days ago and wasn't sure if this car is affected. I only realised this could be an issue today when looking at a 2007 model.

Is anyone able to help identify if the 2011 version is okay or should I stay clear?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

I’m sorry but I can’t answer your question in a more satisfactory way than to recommend searching this forum and maybe the Juke forums.
We do know that Nissan increased the warranty period for this gearbox in the USA and Canada suggesting that Nissan themselves have concerns.

Good Luck

The problem with CVT gear boxes was that they were fairly new, not in design, DAF used them a long time ago. But when a thing goes wrong there are complaints when a thing works perfectly no story. Yes, Nissan CVT gearboxes did fail, so too did Mercedes, but have a look on auto trader and other car selling sites at Nissans with CVT gearboxes and the mileage covered 150k miles is not exceptional and not all of them would have had the gearbox replaced. They do need servicing at regular intervals with fluid changes, I do mine every 40k miles. I have had 2 cars with CVT gear box and so far covered well over the 150k miles. Have a read of this https://www.motorverso.com/nissan-cvt-transmission/ most of the "faulty gear boxes were early 2000 and up to 2009.

Autotrader is great for statistical analysys.

There are 1127 Qashqais for sale covering the period 2007 - 2013, essentially the J10 era.

Of these 97 are auto and 1029 are manual - the other is a virtually new Juke!

If we just search on cars up to 30,000 miles there are 10 - of which 4 are auto and 6 are manual - so 40.0% are auto.

If we search on cars up to 40,000 miles there are 37 - of which 6 are auto and 31 are manual - so 16.2% are auto.

If we search on cars up to 50,000 miles there are 89 - of which 15 are auto and 74 are manual - so 16.8% are auto.

If we search on cars up to 80,000 miles there are 457 - of which 54 are auto and 403 are manual - so 11.8% are auto.

If we search on cars up to 100,000 miles there are 765 - of which 77 are auto and 688 are manual - so 10.1% are auto.

If we search on cars up to 125,000 miles there are 1019 - of which 92 are auto and 927 are manual - so 9.0% are auto.

If we search on cars up to 150,000 miles there are 1105 - of which 96 are auto and 1009 are manual - so 8.7% are auto.

If we search on cars up to 200,000 miles there are 1122 - of which 97 are auto and 1025 are manual - so 8.6% are auto.

... so it seems from that evidence that there is a sharp drop-off in autos between 50-100k miles.

Incidentally the most expensive J10 is a steep £12,920! - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-detail ... 0088249657 if you're interested - but it's a CVT! :)
