Hi, please can I get some advice, I have an immaculate, well cared for 2015 Qashqai 1.2 petrol, I took it to 2 garages as it was making a clicking noise going up hills and something didn't feel right. Both garages said it's the timing chain, which is apparently a common fault on these cars, they both refused to get involved and said I would be better off trading it in. I was pretty shocked as the car still feels pretty new to me. Its done 60,000 miles. I took it to Nissan today and have been told it needs stripping down at a cost of £750 and either needs a new timing chain for £1500 or a new engine which could cost £10k.

Please help, any advice. Nissan customer care have said they may be able to contribute towards the costs, I am so disappointed and wouldn't expect this with a reasonably new car that I paid over 12K for 4 years ago. Any tips or advice??? Thanks, feeling pretty lost and confused.

They shouldn't need to strip it down loads, all need to do is check with you if you've been topping up oil more often incase of excessive oil consumption. If so then check the bores with bore camera if bores okay then run nissans approved engine cleaner through it (this removes all the soot build up within the piston rings seats and scraper rings and the drain holes in the bottom of the pistons) then recheck oil consumption over time. If its still consuming oil then your looking at a bigger issue.

If it isn't consuming oil anymore or incase it never has been consuming alot of oil then replace the timing chain and tensioner and oil pump (new and improved oil pump has replaced the old type to lower failures of the tensioner i can only assume). Obviously timing chain replacement is like easy 7 to 8 hour job if done correctly and not rushed (proper cleaning of covers and allowing new sealant to cure fully)

Welcome to this forum

Our largest topic relates to the problems with this engine. Please look through it and find out what other people have succeeded in doing - or not.

viewtopic.php?t=2780 - there are 78 PAGES of concerns and advice to wade through but it WILL put you in the picture much better

If you have a FULL service history carried out properly every year at a Nissan dealer you may get a contribution.

I decided to get out before the problem started when my warranty ran out, and the warranty extension costs were significant.

Thanks for your replies. The issue is, if they replace the timing chain, which I've asked them to do, I am left with a car that will possibly have further issues or need a new engine down the line. My problem is that after it's repaired how can I morally sell it to another person when I know there has been an issue and they might then get lumbered with a bad engine. No idea what is the best thing to do. Maybe I could part ex it with another garage but I don't know. I paid 12k for it 4 years ago and thought it had years in it. Thanks I've seen the thread very worrying.

I part-ex'ed mine - to be honest I usually do - but that avoided selling directly to someone who might then get the problem - though bearing in mind mine was a relatively early J11 it wasn't exhibiting any symptoms when I sold it after 3 years. I got £12k for it in June 2018.

If it is one of those less reliable engines I read about here ...
YMMV of course, but if you paid 12k 4 years ago.
And ... you can still get 7k now (and those people who buy it from you know the car needs to be repaired) ?
That means you 'lose' only 5K over a period of 4 years !
IMHO I think I, personally, might go for it (but only if one can easily pay for a replacement) !

I am hoping Nissan will contribute to the payment and am currently going through a case with them. I have been offered 7300 part ex but I don't know I LOVE my car and this is so disappointing. I thought I was buying a quality car that would last. 6 years doesn't seem that old to me, I know in the motor trade this is probably ancient but to me it's very special and my pride and joy. I've looked after it so well and don't think I would be able to get something similar again. It was done through a loan which took me 3 years to pay off. And the car is finally mine and now this....

Try another garage? Possibly getting Nissan to suggest one?
