When the dealer puts your order into the system is there anyway that you can track your build to see how it's progressing via an app etc or are you depending how good your dealership keeps you informed

No one's reported anything except hassling their dealer for info.

My dealer didn't need chasing...rang monthly with an update and weekly as things got closer.

My dealer has been good too, regular updates from the salesman and one call from his manager.

For a car build in the UK the tracking doesn't appear to be very good. To give an example with Skoda you are given the order number and you can contact customer service any time and they will update you. You can follow it from factory to port in Czech Republic to the name of the ship it's on to the port in the UK. When I contacted Nissan customer service they told me to ring the dealer who wouldn't return calls post sale!

I ordered mid September and the dealer told me it would only appear properly on the system about 2 months before it is due for delivery. Might be when it is actually scheduled for the production line.
