Diesel Additives

After owning a diesel car for a few years, I was told that diesel Engines need to be taken on a long run because my daily use trips were quite short. This was because it will "carbon up" if I didnt
After hearing that, I read up a bit about that issue and started using redex additive whenever I had full tank and also I also used take it for a long run and drop it down a gear on the motorway for 20 mins now and then

Now I have my 1.5 diesel QQ and my daily commute is still quite short, I have added redex to the fuel (and used Premium diesel ) but not on a regular basis as I forget to do so.
I am now doing my own maintenance routine so will be adding it to the list at every fill up now.

The question I have really, are fuel additives really the answer to stopping it carboning up or is the best way of preventing it happening by taking it on a long trip and drop it down a gear for 20 mins once a week to clean it out

Whats peoples thoughts on fuel additives use ?

premium diesels contain the additives allready and that why it costs you more to buy, i buy carlube injector cleaner a pour the whole bottle in every 3,000 miles, never had a problem with mine after 80,000 miles, diesels will be fine if you do long drives at least once a month so give it a blast down a motorway or duel rd will stop you getting dpf problems. later.

before that Ive used Archoil 6900-D for 3 years and the 6400-D cleaner once a year, in my opinion it works, I very rarely see my car regen and it runs very smooth, I do mainly town driving with 1-2 days in to my office which is 20 miles each way, this was my mpg from ashton in makerfield to daresbury park about 20 miles.

@mark65- Thats really good mileage, Its better than my best ever which was a 5 mile commute to work which is mostly downhill.
Best long journey I had was 74mpg from over 100 miles. Perhaps my fuel system will be better once cleaned out. Ive ordered some of the stuff from your link but will wait until this tank of redex additive runs out

Run the 6400-d max first

this uses the whole tin to a full tank, i put it in once a year, once its used then use the additive at each fuel up, will last a long time.
