I have a QQ Tekna 2017 1.2 Petrol Turbo was getting loud idle/rattle and smelly exhaust fumes and Nissan dealer advised to replace timing chain and exhaust solenoid.

Two days after I still think the idle is noisy although engine fumes smell more normal now.

Of note when on the same day after timing chain replacement I put up bonnet to check and could smell what smelt like oil burning smell but not sure if that's just the new lubricants/oils used during replacement giving off a smell?

Also I want to know why the dealers recommend timing chain replacement only, I have read that engine replacement is also normally required if timing chain has failed early, unsure if they did any compression tests to be honest.

I have only 44k miles on clock.

Work was repaired under Evans Halshaw extended warranty which I purchased when buying the vehicle around two years ago.

Was it using a lot of oil?

My advice would be to sell it

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I can't confirm if any oil loss occured as never top up or check myself to be honest (I know I probably should) but have had all services done by Nissan dealer and they never mentioned about low oil before.

My plan is to take out the Nissan Good to Go Service Plan which includes Nissan warranty for a year as my Evans Halshaw Extended Warranty runs out soon which I got when buying this used vehicle around 2 years ago.

The ironic thing is because of these good forums I have proactively checked and noticed these symptoms, most general owners may not pick up any obvious issues until it's too late!

It's crucial to maintain a warranty that will cover it.

Oil levels should really be checked weekly - monthly at the extreme. Leaving it entirely to the dealer is a recipe for disaster.

It was so easy in the olden days. My Citroen XM had an oil level gauge on the dashboard that gave a reading every time the ignition was turned on. All my recent motorbikes have had a glass port on the side which makes it SO easy to check the level.

New article today on The Guardian website today about the 1.2 engine problem so still making headlines:

https://amp.theguardian.com/money/2024/ ... -servicing

Interestingly the article hyperlinks straight to this forum so looks like journalists read our forum post too!

The affected car mentioned is however a later 1.3 not the 1.2
