System fault

Post by jacjak » Sun Sep 16, 2018 6:31 am

Have anybody had this "System Fault" light up on your display? I have it several times after a couple of minutes of driving without any reasonable cause. Turning off the car and turning it on back again after an hour or so, it's gone but sometimes it comes back again. I want to take to the dealer but am afraid they will say all kinds of faults and charge me a whole lot of money for nothing, not to say about wasted time.
Some say it's the battery but it is a new car and of course a new battery (Tekna 2017 J11B 1.2 turbo).
Other say it's the radar on the auto emergency brakes that is dirty.

Handbook:

36. Unavailable: Front Radar Obstruction warning (if so equipped)
If the sensor area of the front bumper is covered with dirt or obstructed, making it impossible to detect a vehicle ahead, the Forward Emergency Braking (FEB) system, Forward Emergency Braking (FEB) with pedestrian detection system or Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system is automatically turned off. The Forward Emergency Braking (FEB) system warning light (orange) will illuminate and the warning message will appear in the vehicle information display. If the warning message appears, park the vehicle in a safe location and turn the engine off.
Check to see if the sensor area of the front bumper is blocked. If the sensor area of the front bumper is blocked, remove the blocking material.
Restart the engine. If the warning light continues to illuminate, have the Forward Emergency Braking (FEB) system checked. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.
For more details, see “Forward Emergency Braking (FEB)” (P.5-80), “Forward Emergency Braking (FEB) with pedestrian detection system”
(P.5-86) or “Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC)” (P.5-60).
...
SYSTEM TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE
Condition A
When the radar sensor picks up interference from another radar source, making it impossible to detect a vehicle ahead, the FEB system is automatically turned off.
The FEB system warning light (orange) will illuminate.
Action to take
When the above conditions no longer exist, the FEB system will resume automatically.
Condition B
In the following conditions, the FEB system warning light (orange) will illuminate and the “Unavailable: Front Radar Obstruction” warning
message will appear in the vehicle information display.
. The sensor area on the front of the vehicle is covered with dirt or is obstructed.
Action to take
If the warning light (orange) comes on, stop the vehicle in a safe place and turn the engine off. Clean the radar cover on the front of the vehicle with a soft cloth, and restart the engine. If the warning light continues to illuminate, have the FEB system checked. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.
. When driving on roads with limited road structures or buildings (for example, long bridges, deserts, snow fields, driving next to long walls).
Action to take
When the above conditions no longer exist, the FEB system will resume automatically.
Condition C
When the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system is OFF, the FEB brake will not operate. In this case only visible and audible warning operates. The FEB system warning light (orange) will illuminate.
Action to take
When the VDC system is ON, the FEB system will resume automatically.
SYSTEM MALFUNCTION
If the FEB system malfunctions, it will be turned off automatically, a chime will sound, the FEB system warning light (orange) will illuminate and the “Malfunction” warning message will appear in the vehicle information display.
Action to take:
If the FEB system warning light (orange) comes on, stop the vehicle in a safe location. Turn the engine off and restart the engine. If the warning light continues to illuminate, have the FEB system checked. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.
SYSTEM MAINTENANCE
The sensor *A is located on the front of the vehicle.
To keep the system operating properly, be sure to observe the following:
. Always keep the sensor area on the front of the vehicle clean.
. Do not strike or damage the areas around the sensor.
. Do not cover or attach stickers or similar objects on the front of the vehicle near the sensor area. This could cause failure or malfunction.
. Do not attach metallic objects near the sensor area (brush guard, etc.). This could cause failure or malfunction.
. Do not alter, remove or paint the front of the vehicle near the sensor area. Before customizing or restoring the sensor area, it is
recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer.

Thank you so much for that extended and very interesting answer.
That was more or less what I suspected. Now I know what was the problem
