Qashqai Model: Mk.2 Qashqai - J11 (2013–2017)

Having bought a used 2016 1.2 petrol Qashqai from Arnold Clark in 2018, we were surprised to find that a slight noise / rattle led to a new engine being fitted by local dealer earlier in 2019, under warranty, not long before the warranty expired. Plenty of posts regarding the engine noise and cylinder compression on here and elsewhere. The car has been ok since the new engine was fitted, and even possibly had slightly improved performance since before the new engine.

More surprised recently that after repeated problems with car not starting, needed a new battery. After a couple of times where the battery seemed to be flat, bought a £60 battery booster from Halfords (overpriced I know, but needed it in a hurry). Ended up using the booster several times, but without needing it every time we started the car. There was no pattern to the failure to start. Battery seemed to be ok sometimes but not others, and not related to journey leading up to failure to start. Puzzled about why it kept failing to start we got a local garage to check battery and their tester showed up only 52% charge and reported “Replace Battery”.

Like with the engine problem, we looked on this site’s forums and once again, found useful information leading us to take the car to dealer for their advice. They tested battery and if failed their test and had 50% charge. Initially, service manager informed us that no longer under warranty, new battery would be around £170. After explaining that I was unhappy at needing the new engine after less than 3 years old, and that the issue with the Fiamm battery seemed to be another known issue, the service manager eventually accepted that the battery issue was known to Nissan and they agreed to replace the battery free of charge.

So we now have a car that is 3.5 years old that has had a new engine and new battery. Quite unsure about keeping the car, in case there are yet more issues, particularly if known to Nissan.

In effect you have yourself a brand new car enginewise at least, surely that must have some sort of warranty of it's own!
Personally I would keep it...BUT if things start going dodgy again further down the line then reconsider, but hopefully all will be good from now on.

It’s a 16 plate. As for the engine, not sure. If it’s a new engine, wouldn’t it be the latest Euro spec?

It will be Euro 6. I also have a 16 plate and was under impression that the issues surrounding oil loss and engine replacements were due to a faulty batch of engines in older models, and Nissan had since solved the problem

Our engine had a slight rattle which turned out to be because one cylinder had low compression. We hadn’t noticed oil loss or even performance issues. It’s a 1.2 so didn’t expect much. It was noticeably better with new engine. Just glad we found it before warranty expired.

I'd have thought replacement would be like for like.

The February 2016 brochure lists all engines as EURO6b.

I only previous to that have a September 2014 one which lists all engines as EURO5b+
